The Framework

The framework will guide public and private decision-makers, policy practitioners and environmentally-minded organisations in their policy influencing as well as implementation efforts. Specific recommendations to strengthen and coordinate existing mechanisms, programmes and incentives across the international convention landscape are regularly updated.

International policy relevant to marine and coastal ecosystems can be clustered around two work streams:

  • Enhance action to reduce threats and stressors, and

  • Establish conservation measures, including the protection and restoration of coastal and marine ecosystems

Implementation efforts greatly benefit from:

  • Integrated planning approaches;

  • Adequate support mechanisms, including finance and capacity building; and

  • Simplified and harmonized Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MRV)
